Synopsis : Sous le règne d’Ietsuna, 4ème Shogun Tokugawa, fut adoptée une fiscalité agraire qui pesa lourdement sur les paysans. Les révoltes se multiplièrent dans tout le pays. Nous sommes le 6 avril 1678, le secrétaire d’état Hotta Bichu Masatoshi, suspecté de complot politique est assigné devant le tribunal shogunal. On le soupçonne de préparer pour le 8 avril, le jour des cérémonies fêtant la naissance de Bouddha une révolte en ville et au château pour renverser le ministre Sakai Yutanokami. Celui-ci a conclu un pacte avec le chancelier Kofu en échange des pleins pouvoirs. Le grand inspecteur Hojo enquête pour dénoncer le complot tandis que dans l’ombre, un petit groupe prépare l’attentat.
